Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.
FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students. Through the continuum, students have:
- Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
- A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.
Our Oak View ES Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), Kathryn Moreno-Dunk, collaborates with the school staff to determine the appropriate level of advanced academic services. Ongoing observation and assessment ensure that student needs are being met.
Parents may refer their child for advanced academic services or get additional information on the screening process at Oak View by contacting Mrs. Moreno-Dunk.
Oak View Local Full-Time program - How the Local Full-Time program differs from the Full-Time Center
Oak View's Local Full-Time program provides an important option for advanced learners who need the challenge of a full-time AAP center curriculum and do not want to leave their local school.
The Full-Time Center for Oak View ES is located at Willow Springs ES.
Teachers in both settings are trained in gifted education and teach the same advanced academic curriculum to students who are ready for a highly challenging instructional program in the four core subject areas.
The main difference is in the make-up of the class. All of the students in full-time, center-based classes at Willow Springs have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools to comprise the center class. In a Local Full-Time classroom at Oak View, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving.
FCPS has established deadlines for full-time service referrals. There is a fall screening window for students in grades 3-6 who moved into FCPS after January of 2024. The deadline for the full-time referral form and all optional materials is October 15, 2024. The spring screening window due date for students in grades 2-6 is December 15, 2024 and includes the referral form and optional materials. Students in the second grade Universal Screener Referral are not required to submit a referral form.
